Smart Garage Door Openers and Phone Alerts: Worth It?

Smart Garage Door Openers and Phone Alerts: Worth It?

Quick answer: For most Portland and Vancouver homes, a smart garage door opener is worth it for one feature: a phone alert that says the door is still open, plus a button that closes it from anywhere. Many existing openers can add smart control with a retrofit kit. You need Wi-Fi in the garage, and during a power outage the app usually goes quiet.

Key takeaways

  • The feature that earns its keep here is the left-open alert, paired with remote close.
  • Many openers can go smart with an add-on kit. An opener too old to have photo eyes should be replaced, not upgraded.
  • The app follows the opener: myQ for LiftMaster, Aladdin Connect for Genie, the Nice G.O. App for Nice/Linear.
  • Smart control does not replace the monthly 2×4 reversal test, and it cannot help in an outage without backup power.

What can a smart garage door opener actually do?

A smart garage door opener connects to your home Wi-Fi and an app on your phone. The motor, rail and door work as before, but now you can see and control the door from anywhere you have a signal.

LiftMaster says its myQ platform lets you open and close the door from your phone, get activity alerts, set schedules and connect to smart home systems. Here is how we at Larry Myers Garage Doors break down each feature, and whether you need a new opener to get it.

Do I need a new opener, or can I retrofit?

Often you can retrofit. Many openers take an add-on, usually a small hub near the opener and a sensor on the door that reports open or closed. Genie, for example, sells Aladdin Connect as a wireless kit for one door, a wired kit for up to three doors, and built into some of its Wi-Fi openers.

Whether an add-on fits depends on your opener’s brand, model and age. Check the model number on the motor unit against the app maker’s compatibility list, or call our office and ask.

A new opener is the better choice when:

  • There are no photo eyes near the floor. Since 1993, openers made for the U.S. must have a second safety feature, usually photo eyes. An opener without that feature should be replaced, not put online.
  • The opener strains, grinds or reverses for no reason. An app will not fix a tired motor.
  • You want battery backup too, and your opener cannot take it.

Which apps go with which openers?

The app follows the opener, not the door. Your door might be a Clopay, Wayne Dalton or Northwest Door, but the app depends on the motor that runs it:

  • LiftMaster: myQ, from Chamberlain Group. Northwest Door pairs its doors with LiftMaster openers.
  • Genie: Aladdin Connect, for iPhone and Android. Wayne Dalton pairs its doors with Genie openers.
  • Nice/Linear: the Nice G.O. App. Nice calls its Linear 661 series its first line of smart, Nice-branded openers.
  • Clopay: makes doors, not openers, so it depends on the opener above your door.

We are an authorized dealer for LiftMaster (myQ) and Genie (Aladdin Connect) openers, so we can set up the app on a new opener or tell you which retrofit fits the opener you have. Before you choose, make sure your garage gets a steady Wi-Fi signal. A detached garage at the back of a deep lot may need an extender. The wall button, remotes and keypad keep working without Wi-Fi.

Does a smart opener work during a power outage?

Not on its own. When the power goes out, the motor stops unless the opener has battery backup. Your router usually goes dark too, so even a battery-backed opener may not reach the app until the internet returns.

Outages are part of our winters, usually from trees and limbs falling on lines. In January 2024, ice and wind left more than 200,000 customers across the region without power.

Battery backup runs the door on its own power for a while. LiftMaster says its backup battery usually lasts one to two years, depending on use, so test yours each fall. Our guide to garage door opener battery backup covers what to look for.

With no backup, the red emergency release lets you lift a closed door by hand, using a handle, never the joints between panels. If the door feels heavy, leave it closed and call. See our guide to opening a garage door in a power outage.

Are smart garage door openers a security risk?

Any connected device carries some risk, but an older opener can be the weak point. DASMA’s opener safety tips recommend rolling code technology, which changes the code with each click so a thief cannot record your remote’s signal and replay it.

For the app itself, use a strong, unique password, turn on two-step sign-in if it is offered, keep the app updated, and remove users who no longer need access. The alert helps security too: if the door opens at 2 a.m., you know. If it opens with no one touching it, see why a garage door opens by itself.

Safety matters too. In 2023, CPSC announced a recall of about 96,400 LiftMaster myQ garage door control panels made from March to October 2022, because their secondary entrapment protection could fail and let the door close on an obstruction. No injuries were reported, and affected owners can get a free replacement panel.

Whatever opener you own, test it monthly: a 2×4 laid flat under the door must make it reverse, and a blocked photo eye must stop it from closing. Our reversal and balance test guide explains both.

Why the left-open alert matters more in the Northwest

In a dry climate, a garage left open all day collects dust. Here it collects water. NWS Portland says nearly 90 percent of our annual rain falls between mid-October and mid-May, and NOAA normals give PDX about 18 to 19 days with measurable rain in each of November, December and January. Wind-driven rain can soak boxes, tools and anything parked near the door.

Picture a commute from Felida to downtown Portland. Halfway across the I-5 bridge, with rain on the way, you wonder whether you closed the door. Without an app, you turn around or worry all day. With one, a glance at your phone once you park tells you, and one tap closes it.

Wind raises the stakes. East winds funnel through the Columbia River Gorge and blow hardest where it opens out, near Troutdale and Camas, and they can reach east Portland. DASMA warns that a garage door left open in high wind leaves the walls, ceiling and roof open to structural damage.

When to call a professional

An add-on kit can be a manageable project, but the door and opener underneath have to be sound first. Call us if:

  • The door fails the 2×4 reversal test or the photo eye test. Stop using the opener until it is repaired.
  • Your opener has no photo eyes, or it strains, grinds or reverses for no reason.
  • You are not sure an add-on will work with your opener, or you are ready for a new one.

Stop using the door and call right away if you hear a loud bang, see a gap in a spring coil, notice a frayed or slack cable, or the door suddenly feels heavy or hangs crooked. Keep people and pets clear, and do not pull the emergency release with the door up. Springs store a lot of energy, and that repair is ours.

Our technicians repair and replace openers and safety sensors, with same-day service available. See our garage door openers page, or request a free estimate and we will help you choose between an add-on and a new opener. Late summer, before the rain returns, is a good time to set it up.

Frequently asked questions

Is a smart garage door opener worth it?

For most households, yes, especially if you have ever driven away wondering whether the door was closed. In Portland and Vancouver, where rain and wind can blow into an open garage for months, the left-open alert and remote close earn the upgrade. If you rarely leave the door open, a keypad may be all you need.

Are smart garage door openers hard to install?

A retrofit kit is often a manageable project for a handy homeowner: mount a small hub, attach a door sensor and pair it with the app, following the maker’s instructions. A new opener is a bigger job, with the rail, motor, photo eyes and sometimes a new outlet. We recommend a professional for a full opener replacement and for anything involving springs or cables.

Is myQ the same as the LiftMaster app?

Yes. myQ is the smartphone platform Chamberlain Group uses for LiftMaster openers. It lets you open and close the door, get activity alerts, set schedules and connect to smart home systems. Genie openers use a different app, Aladdin Connect, and Nice/Linear openers use the Nice G.O. App, so the right app depends on the brand of your opener.

Is it safe to close my garage door when I am not home?

It can be, as long as the safety systems work. Nobody is watching the door come down, so run the 2×4 reversal test and the photo eye test once a month. DASMA advises watching a closing door until it stops, so close it remotely only when you know the path is clear. If the door fails either test, stop using the opener until it is repaired.
