Consider Your Door’s Size and Weight
If you own a heavier door, you’ll want to select an opener with enough horsepower to handle the door’s weight. Some motors won’t generate the torque needed to lift a heavier door continuously and will degrade fast if they’re under too much stress.
Conversely, if you purchase one with too little horsepower, you could either break the opener or notice it struggling to lift the door, neither of which is ideal.
Horsepower Affects Longevity
You can get away with a smaller amount of horsepower if you have a lighter door. In fact, it could help you save some money up front, as you likely won’t feel the need to pay for better performance.
However, horsepower does affect an opener’s longevity. High-horsepower openers will almost always last longer because they won’t have to work as hard to lift the door. Even if you own a lightweight door, more horsepower might be the way to go if you don’t want to replace your opener any sooner than you have to.
The Relationship Between Horsepower and Door Weight
There are three basic motors on the market: ⅓ horsepower (HP), ½ HP, and ¾ HP.
Generally, ⅓ HP motors are more affordable but don’t last nearly as long as more powerful units. However, you can make a strong case for them if your door is particularly light, as they’ll be much more efficient. While these motors can lift doors with distributed weight, they’ll wear out much more quickly, regardless of size.
The ½ HP option tends to be the most popular, as it’s the perfect middle ground between performance and affordability. The ¾ HP is ideal for heavy or oversized doors, especially if you want the opener to function long-term.
Motors in the latter two categories are often more expensive, but if you consider how much it would cost to replace a cheaper ⅓ HP motor repeatedly, it could be significantly more economical in the long run.
