Going on Vacation? How to Secure Your Garage Before Leaving

While going away on vacation is fun and exciting, planning it can actually become very stressful. In addition to making flight and hotel reservations, you’ll want to make sure your property is safe. This includes making it more difficult for intruders to access your garage.

Depending on the type of garage door you use, there are a few different methods for securing it.

Activate the Vacation Lock on the Wall Console

Newer garage door openers use a wall console for easy operation when you don’t have the remote handy. Most of these consoles come equipped with a switch or button that activates the vacation lock. This feature prevents anyone from opening the door via the remote, wall console, or a mobile app, and it remains in operation until you switch it off.

Unplug Your Garage Door Operating System

If your system doesn’t come equipped with a vacation lock, you can have a garage door service install a newer model for you. In the meantime, you can ensure your property is protected by simply unplugging the garage door opener unit. Since the system runs on electrical power, you can ensure that the unit can’t function by removing access to that power.

Use Your Mobile App

The mobile app that comes with most modern garage door opening systems allows you to monitor the status of the garage door. Use the app to determine whether the door is open, slightly ajar, or fully closed. This allows you to see the garage door’s status from anywhere in the world.

You can use the app to operate the door as well. For example, if you’re expecting a package, you can open the door for delivery personnel. After they leave the package, you can remotely close and secure the door. If you have security cameras in your garage, you can also verify that the delivery person has departed.

Lock the Door

If you don’t have an automated opener, or if you want additional security, you can secure a padlock to the door. This ensures that no one can open your door by hacking an automated system or by forcing the door open.
